Navigating the China Transit Visa Process
Don't Let Airline Confusion Ground You
Our journey started with a small hiccup. Flying with Hainan Airlines from Brussels, we discovered that some airline staff may not be fully aware of the visa-free transit rules. This is a common issue! The key is to be prepared. Before you fly, print a copy of the official visa-free transit policy for your layover city. Having a physical document to show the airline desk was a game-changer for us.

Smooth Sailing with China Immigration
While the airline part was a little stressful, the process on the ground in China was surprisingly seamless. Upon arrival, the immigration staff were incredibly efficient and made everything easy. Despite a language barrier (a lot of pointing and hand gestures!), they knew exactly what to do. They provided us with a form to fill out and then directed us to the specific transit visa counter. All you need is your passport and your onward boarding pass, and before you know it, you're stamped and ready to go!
Temporary Entry Permit: Upon arrival, you will fill out a form and be directed to the transit visa counter to get a "Temporary Entry Permit" stamp in your passport. This permit is what allows you to leave the airport during your layover.
Making the Most of Your Beijing Layover
With our passports stamped, we had 15 hours to spare. Thanks to a fantastic free layover tour, we were able to visit one of the world's most incredible wonders: the Great Wall of China.
Great Wall Free Tour: A Game-Changer
Booking a free tour was a brilliant decision. Not only did it save us time and stress, but it also meant we had a guide to lead the way. We didn’t need to worry about maps or local navigation. These tours are specifically designed for layover passengers, with options for a morning trip to the Great Wall and an afternoon trip to Tiananmen Square.
Essential Apps for Your China Trip
Whether you join a tour or explore on your own, a few apps are absolutely essential for a smooth experience in China:
• VPN: The "Great Firewall" of China means many Western apps like Google, Facebook, and Instagram are blocked. Download a VPN and set it up BEFORE you land. This is crucial for staying connected.
• WeChat: This is the most popular social media and payment app in China. It's incredibly handy for everything from communication to mobile payments. I highly recommend downloading it before your trip.
