Exploring The Exotic Tunisian Cuisine

Exotic spices and being colonized by France in the past have made Tunisian cuisine rich in exotic flavors. Here are some typical Tunisian dishes that must be tried to experience their deliciousness:

1. Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish often served for breakfast. It is made with eggs cooked with spices such as cumin, cinnamon, paprika powder, and mixed with tomato sauce. It is best enjoyed with pieces of bread.

2. Couscous and Tagine

Like many other North African countries, Tunisian cuisine is also known for its couscous and tagine dishes. Tagine usually consists of lamb, chicken, or beef, cooked in a clay cone-shaped pot with vegetables and spices until the meat is soft. It is then served with couscous cooked by simply pouring hot water over it.

3. Tunisian Crepes

Adopting French cuisine, which has influenced Tunisia since 1881, French crepes are also popular in Tunisian cuisine. Tunisian crepes can be found sold on the streets. They are filled with spicy harissa sauce, cheese, boiled eggs, and tuna. Crepes are best enjoyed while still warm.

4. Harissa

Indonesian tourists who visit Tunisia will surely be delighted because Tunisian cuisine also includes spicy condiments like sambal. Harissa is made from red chili peppers and baklouti chili peppers that are roasted with various spices such as coriander, caraway seeds, cumin, and tomato sauce. Its exotic spicy flavor will surely whet your appetite!

5. Baklawa

Just like in Turkey, Tunisia also offers the sweet dessert baklava, known as baklawa. This pastry made of layers of pastry dough is typically filled with nuts like pistachios, then drizzled with honey and rose water. It is best served with a cup of tea or coffee.
